Quilt block celebrates 45 years of family ownership

COMINS — Ruth Maxwell’s barn got a little more colorful June 8 with the addition of a quilt block commemorating the family’s 45th year of owning the property.

The block is based on Maxwell’s design called “Bertha Jane's Star” as a tribute to her grandmother. The design placed second in the Kaleidoscope of Color quilting contest in 1982.

The barn on the property is built in 1901 and the house was built two years later, according to Maxwell’s daughter Mary Bensen.

The quilt square was painted by Susan Shantz and was installed by the Oscoda County Road Commission.

For more information on the quilt block hanging, check out this week's edition of the Oscoda County Herald.
