New county board of commissioners has first official meeting

Yoder and Varner selected as chair and vice chair

MIO — New Commissioners Kyle Yoder and Chuck Varner were chosen as the chairman and vice chairman, respectively, of the Oscoda County Board of Commissioners, and the board set its meeting times for the year Jan. 3.

The decisions were made at the board’s organizational meeting, its first official meeting with the new commissioners. One significant change the board suggested and implemented on a trial basis was the prospect of having evening meetings. After some more discussion the commissioners unanimously voted to hold four evening meetings this year, one in each quarter.

Yoder was the first to mention the idea, explaining that many residents have reached out to him asking for evening meetings. He suggested the commissioners discuss hosting a quarterly evening meeting that would take the place of a regularly scheduled morning one.

Varner mentioned he has also had multiple people ask the same thing, but has heard of mixed results in the past when evening meetings were held.

“I’ve gotten the same thing,” Varner said. “But I know you (board Secretary Brenda Moore) have been here through all of it and even when we have those, they don’t get the turnout expected.”

Moore agreed with Varner.

No other major changes were made to the board’s meeting schedule, and meetings will still be held the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month unless they are rescheduled due to a holiday or some other reason. Meetings will begin with a county workshop at 9 a.m. and the county commissioners meeting will follow at 10 a.m.
