Matthew James Scherzer, 46, of Mio peacefully passed away at home Sunday, June 25, 2017, with his loved ones beside him.

He was born Dec. 24, 1970, in Saginaw to Ray William and Betty Jean Scherzer. Matt was a 1990 graduate of Mio AuSable High School. After graduating he went to work for Scherzer Builders in Freeland, learning the trade of a builder from his uncle Phil and cousin Mike Scherzer. He came back to Mio working as a tree trimmer for Asplundh Tree Expert Co. Matt then got employment working for E & J Concrete of Mio as a concrete finisher. In 1994 Matt decided to start his own business, Scherzer Concrete. He was self-employed until 2014.

In 1994 he built himself a home in Mio, where he then met the love of his life, Karie Travis. They shortly after became a family, having their daughters Samantha and Nicole. Matt’s greatest enjoyment was being a father; his family was his life.

Matt also enjoyed fishing, cookouts, camping with his family, car races and helping anyone out that he could. He always managed to take nothing and engineer it into something to make it work at his home or on a job.

In 2012 Matt was experiencing back pain. He had gone in for back surgery in 2014. Many months later he was still in pain. In October 2015 he was diagnosed with stage three multiple myeloma blood/bone marrow cancer.

The Scherzer family would like to express our gratitude to the Grayling hospice team. Matt loved each and every one of you deeply. We also thank everyone for the phone calls, cards, food, stopping out, texts, kind words, the donations, the love and support and prayers. Thank you to the Amish community, especially the Byler families, for all you did for Matt and his family.

Matt is survived by his longtime companion, Karie Travis; his daughters, Samantha Travis and Nicole Scherzer of Mio; his mother, Betty Jean (Southworth) Phillips of Mio; his brother, Mitchell Scherzer; nephew, Masen Scherzer of Luzerne; sister, Kathleen Hochstetler and nephew Christopher Hochstetler of Luzerne; sister, Karen Scherzer and niece Kaylea Blamer of Mio; Kurt and Kristin (Scherzer) Lafnitzegger and nephew Kenneth Scherzer of Orlando, Fla.; Chris Smith of Mio; T.J. and Stacie Kitchen and nephews Ricky and Cameron of Livonia; Daniel Smith of St. Charles, Mo.

In honor of Matt’s wishes, there will be a celebration of life held at Kittle Hall at a later date.
