Man escapes sheriff department custody

MIO — A man with out-of-town warrants for his arrest escaped custody of the Oscoda County Sheriff’s Department only to be recaptured less than two hours later, Sheriff Kevin Grace said.

Grace said his deputies knew the suspect, Patrick Burr, 38, of Allenton, had warrants for his arrest.

“Our office received information that the subject was in the area,” Grace said.

Sheriff’s deputies went to a residence in the area and arrested him without incident.

However, after the booking process, Grace said his deputies were moving Burr outside of the building when he took off running.

“After a thorough investigation of this matter, it was found that there were policies that were not completely followed in the handling and movement of the inmate after arrest that contributed to this incident,” Grace said. “We will be addressing this internally with our staff to ensure this type of incident does not occur in the future and that we always take the safety of our community, inmates and staff very serious. We will do everything possible to make this something we can learn from to avoid other incidents.”

Grace said the community was not in jeopardy because of Burr’s escape, and he was apprehended only a short while later.

“With the assistance of the Michigan State Police and the MSP canine unit, the subject was subsequently found about an hour and a half later at an acquaintance’s approximately two blocks away and was re-arrested and charged with escaping custody and resisting and obstructing,” he said.

Grace said the man was previously wanted on misdemeanor charges, but now faces two felony charges — for fleeing and eluding and resisting arrest — because of the incident.

Burr was arraigned in district court on the two charges related to his escape April 5.
