Local lumber store reinvests in its community

MIO — After roughly five months of renovation, a local business is putting the final touches on an expansion that is meant to be a way to give back to its customers.

In mid-October Highland Lumber in Mio began building an expansion that nearly doubled the size of its store. Highland employee David Weaver Jr. said this was something the staff had been debating for years. Among other minor issues with the space, Weaver said at times in the old store customers may have felt cramped near the register. He said now, with 50 percent more showroom space, people will have ample room in the new addition.

While Weaver is excited to have a larger showroom, his favorite new part of the store is an area that will house no products. If one were to take a left turn off the showroom floor up a cozy flight of stairs, they would find an area that is akin to a kitchen and dining room. This space, Weaver said, was specifically made to cater to Highland’s customers and contractors.

“I love bringing people up here,” he said. “In a way, it’s removed from the rest of the business. This is a space where we can bring in our contractors, cook breakfast and have meetings.”

Weaver said this area set aside from everything else is the best way for Highland Lumber to give back to the surrounding community. He said taking care of its customers is in the store’s best interest, because they are the ones ensuring Highland stays open for business.

The construction is nearly complete save for wrapping up a few loose ends on the project and finding exactly what the store is going to do with the added space. A grand re-opening open house celebration is slated to occur June 12.
