Local Comins business building total loss in weekend fire

Posted

COMINS — The main building of a local Comins business was a total loss in a fire that occurred June 1.

Sheriff Kevin Grace said Oscoda County Dispatch received a call at roughly 1:20 p.m. and dispatched emergency personnel to Michigan Lumber and Wood Fiber on North Abbe Road.

Grace said Fairview Fire Department personnel were first on the scene and were assisted by Tri-Town Fire Department personnel in fighting the fire that fully engulfed the main building on the premises. Emergency personnel did not leave the scene until 11 p.m.

No civilian or emergency personnel injuries were reported.

Grace said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but no suspicious activity is suspected. He said initial investigations point to sparks from welding as the cause.

In a thank you published on the lumber company’s Facebook page to emergency services personnel, an update to the community was also given saying, “Don’t blink, we’ll be right back.”
