James F. Colson

Died Dec. 23, 2018


James F. Colson, 83, of Mio passed away at his home Sunday, Dec. 23, 2018.

James was born in Newpoint, Ind., on Aug. 28, 1935. He graduated from Pinconning High School with the class of 1953. He married Cora “Cookie” on Nov. 26, 1955. The couple lived in Bay City and settled in Linwood, where they raised their family. James worked as a millwright for General Motors, Saginaw Manufacturing. The couple retired to Mio in 1990. James was a life member of the National Rifle Association. He was a ham radio operator. He enjoyed gardening, traveling and camping, and was an avid hunter, fisherman and sportsman. He will be remembered as a genuine prankster, and as a faithful and honest friend.

James is survived by his children, James Colson Jr. of Traverse City, Jeffrey (Rebecca) Colson of Lapeer, Jill (Steve) Vasquez of Kawkawlin and Jodi (Jerry) Johnson of Mio; his sisters, Louise Miller and Christine Pozenal, both of Bay City; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cora “Cookie”; his sister, Jeanne Cunningham; and his mother and stepfather, Helen and Melvin Preston. He was also preceded in death by five generations of black labs named Pokey, his chocolate lab Brandy and his cat Sam.

Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 28, 2018, from 5-8 p.m. at the Lashley Funeral Home, Mio, and also Saturday, Dec. 29, from 11 a.m. until funeral services at noon with the Rev. Glynn McMorris officiating. Interment will follow the services at Kittle Cemetery, Mio.
