Inez Joan Long, 86, of Mio passed away from complications of a lifelong battle with rheumatoid arthritis on Monday, Aug. 13, 2018, at the Villa at Rose City.

Joan was born Inez Joan Pagel on June 15, 1932, in Farmington to Leola and William Pagel. Her mother, Leola, passed away shortly after Joan’s birth following complications of childbirth. Joan was adopted and raised by her aunt and uncle, Harry and Clara Pagel, in Farmington. Joan graduated from Farmington High School in 1950, lettering in choir and glee club. She then attended Bronson School of Nursing in Kalamazoo, graduating as a registered nurse in 1953.

She married William F. Long on May 1, 1953, at the Lutheran church in Kalamazoo. Joan worked at Oakwood Memorial Hospital in Dearborn as a nurse in the nursery of the maternity ward. She and Bill lived in Taylor and had three sons, Michael, James and Gordon. The Long family moved to Mio in 1967 and Joan became a lifelong resident of Oscoda County. She worked part-time for seven years in the 1970s at the Rose City nursing home as a nurse and worked one year as a Head Start nurse for the local school districts. Joan was an active member of the Mio United Methodist Church. She and Bill owned a cabin on Lake Superior in Paradise and enjoyed vacationing there.

Joan is survived by her three sons, Michael D. and Susan M. Long of Saline, James D. Long of Mio and Gordon P. Long and Lois Wilson of Johannesburg. Joan also has seven grandchildren, Daniel Long and Beth Kanous of Southfield, Lauren (Long) and Jake Gaecke of DePere, Wis., Casey Long of Chicago, Ill., Sean and Jessica Long of Kalkaska, Brianna Long of Greenville, N.C., Anamari and John Holcomb of Atoka, Okla., and Marcilyn Forbes and Chad Thompson of Tampa, Fla. Joan also has five great-grandchildren, Alice Long, Aksel Gaecke, Bailey Cavanaugh, Kyleigh Cavanaugh and River Holcomb; a sister, Linda and Richard Wagner of Fenton; and a sister-in-law, Carol and Hazen Karp of Tequesta, Fla.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband of 47 years, William F. Long, who died in November 2000.

Visitation is at the Mio United Methodist Church, 1101 W. Eighth St., Mio, MI 48647, Friday, Aug. 17, 2018, at 11 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 1 p.m., with Pastor Brenda Klacking officiating. In accordance with her wishes, cremation will follow. Interment of Joan with Bill’s ashes will be in the United Methodist Church Memorial Garden in Paradise.
