Hunters invited to brag about their bucks

MIO –– The inaugural Oscoda County Buck Pole event will come to Mio Saturday, Nov. 18, for hunters to celebrate the opening of the regular firearm season in Michigan and brag about their bucks with visual proof.

The event is being hosted by AuSable River Outfitters and Blue Collar Clothing Company, where it will be held.

Co-owner of Blue Collar Clothing Company Jorden Susewitz said there will be cash prizes for first deer hung, biggest buck and biggest doe. The biggest buck will be measured by total number of points and outside spread at the widest point, while the biggest buck will be determined by weight and must be completely field dressed. Gift certificates will be awarded to participants in the kids division.

“It is a pole or event where successful hunters celebrating the hunting season can come to and they can enter in their buck or doe, and we’re going to have some food, bonfires, giveaways and cash prizes,” Susewitz said.

There is no entry fee to attend. It is scheduled to run from 5-8 p.m. and the results and prizes will be given out at 8:30 p.m.

All deer entered must be shot in Oscoda County and must be shot between opening day, which is Nov. 15, and the end of the event Nov. 18.

Susewitz said he is looking forward to the camaraderie of the hunters the most.

“(Buck poles are) always a good time,” he said. “I’ve been doing them my whole life and Oscoda County was lacking it. It’s a huge hunting destination up here and it’s something the local businesses can thrive off, and it’s a fun time for everyone to come around and share their successful hunting stories.”

Susewitz said he is hoping for 30-50 entries to be hung at the deer pole, and he thanked the local contributors and sponsors for their assistance in getting the event off the ground.

The buck pole will be held at 200 S. Morenci Ave. in Mio. For more information, contact Blue Collar Clothing Company at 989-826-8181 or AuSable River Outfitters at 989-826-6900.
