Fairview choir to perform ‘Into the Woods’
FAIRVIEW — The Fairview Area Schools High School Choir will be putting on a performance of “Into the Woods Jr.” by James Lapine April 27 and 29.
Director Kevin Salsbury said the play was chosen because it was appropriate for all ages and short in length, at an hour and 15 minutes long. He said the roles in the musical would also highlight voices in the choir.
“Every role in a play or a musical carries with it a certain personality,” he said. “It carries with it a certain range a person has to sing in, and this musical just seemed to fit the group of choir students I have this year.”
He said some of the performers in the play have been in three of the previous musicals the choir has put on. According to a press release from Salsbury, 22 performers will be in the play.
“Into the Woods” first premiered in San Diego in 1986. Academy Award-winning composer Steven Sondheim composed the music and lyrics.
In the one-act musical, a witch curses a baker and his wife with childlessness. To break the curse, the couple has to swipe special objects from a litany of popular fairy-tale characters including Rapunzel and Cinderella.
Salsbury has directed six productions with the Fairview choir, including “Seussical the Musical.” He said past years have seen a strong turnout for the shows. He said tickets will be more difficult to get this year because the show will be held for two nights instead of its usual three.
“We’re cutting down 200 seats that we normally have filled,” he said. “That’s why we’re selling tickets right now so people can get tickets and know that they have a seat.”
Seating is limited to general admission and seats are not numbered.
“They’re good productions,” Salsbury said. “It’s really a shame if people miss them because they’re very good productions; very professionally done.”
The school is able to put on the musical because of an arrangement with Music Theatre International. The licensing company was founded in 1952 by Frank Loesse and provides resources to over 70,000 theater groups ranging from professional to community across 60 countries, according to its website.
“With unforgettable roles, minimal dancing and no chorus, ‘Into the Woods Jr.’ showcases a medium-sized ensemble of talented singers and actors,” MTI’s website states. “The sophisticated score has been adapted to make it more accessible to young performers.”
The musical will be performed at 7 p.m. on April 27 and April 29. Tickets for the musical are $5 and can be purchased at the front office at Fairview Area Schools. Those interested in more information on the performance can call 989-848-2297.
