Event to remind Oscoda County of its heritage

MIO –– The fourth annual Oscoda County Heritage Days will be hosted Aug. 18-19 by the Oscoda fair board with a lumberjack theme and many scheduled events.

Heritage Days will include vendors, a yard sale, silent auctions, food, demonstrations, animals, displays, wagon and hay rides, a comedy show and more, according to coordinator Curt Hiser, who is also a lumberjack competition enthusiast.

“There will be some of the fastest chainsaws in the world there,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun for the people to come watch. It’s good entertainment.”

The competition will include 10 classes, and prizes will be awarded to the top four competitors overall. Hiser said while he is from Mio, this will be his first year being involved with the event.

“I’m hoping to have at least 15 world-class competitors come in along with the Michigan guys,” Hiser said.

The theme was chosen to keep the event in the spirit of the county’s logging heritage, according to the Oscoda County Fair Board’s Facebook page. Visitors will have the opportunity to see sheep shearing, spinning, Dutch oven cooking and basket weaving, and there will also be the opportunity to try their hand at crafts. Live music will be performed Friday night and Saturday by local musicians as well.

A bike rodeo sponsored by the sheriff’s department will be hosted Saturday and is expected to last about a half-hour. Two new bikes will be given away during this time.

Rustic and electric camping will be available during the event for those interested. For more information about camping and prices, contact Carol Chalkey at 989-826-3625.

The weekend events are free to attend and will take place at the Oscoda County Fairgrounds off Caldwell Road north of M-33. For more information, contact Curt Hiser at 989-430-0817.
