Deputies tossing out razors for charity

No-Shave November coming to Oscoda County

Posted

MIO — Don’t worry if your local sheriff’s deputies are looking a bit more rugged than usual throughout the next month: they’re doing so to raise money for a scholarship.

Sheriff Kevin Grace said he and his deputies are going to be participating in No-Shave November throughout the next month in order to raise money for a scholarship to benefit a Mio AuSable or Fairview student pursuing a career in law enforcement.

“We want to raise a few dollars for what we think is a good cause,” Grace said. “To give back to the community that has been treating us so well for so long.”

Grace said this version of No-Shave will be slightly different than the rest going on around the nation. His deputies will donate $25 to grow a goatee and $30 to grow a full beard.

The previous scholarship gifted by the department went to Fairview student Joshua Esch. He is currently serving an internship at the department and is enrolled in the criminal justice program at Kirtland Community College.

“He’s a very nice young man,” Grace said of Esch. “I think he’s going to be a fine officer one day.”

The fundraiser is not just open to deputies, but the general public as well. If anyone is interested in participating, feel free to stop by the Oscoda County Herald office and drop off before-and-after photos, or we can take them for you. Grace asks that anyone who’d like to participate bring in cash or check to the sheriff department. Checks should be made out to the Committee to Promote Public Safety.
