Commissioners hire EMS director

New county prosecutor appointed as well

MIO — The former Oscoda County Board of Commissioners has appointed a new EMS director and accepted the person appointed to the position of county prosecutor.

The commissioners unanimously voted to hire Robert Hunter to the EMS director position. Hunter’s official first day was Dec. 20, the same day he was hired to the position. He will receive a yearly salary of $44,500, and receive full county benefits.

Hunter said he has been working in the EMS field for 34 years, and has worked in various fire departments in the past as well. He said he is looking forward to getting started working at the county.

“Hopefully we can make a difference and have a great EMS service,” Hunter said.

Sheriff Kevin Grace and incoming Commissioner Jackie Bondar said they are happy with the hire the commissioners made. Commissioner Wayne Nutt said he is particularly proud of the hire.

“I think we came up with the best person for the job,” he said. “I don’t believe in luck, but I do feel lucky today, having hired him.”

The commissioners also took care of officially recognizing the promotion of two EMS employees. Ken Templeton has been upgraded to full-time from part-time work, and Tyler Young was upgraded from contingency to part-time work.

At first, Commissioner Jack Kischnick was apprehensive about making decisions for the EMS after they just hired a new director minutes previously.

“I have a little bit of a problem with doing this,” Kischnick said. “We just hired Mr. Hunt. I don’t see why we’re usurping his authority already.”

Commission Chairperson LaNita Olsen said these promotions were officially made before they hired Hunt. She said the promotions were meant to be discussed at the previous board meeting, but she forgot to have them put on the agenda for the meeting.

In addition to the hires made at the EMS, the commissioners also approved of the person appointed to the position of county prosecutor by Judge David Riffel, Kristi McGregor. The commissioners did not make any comments on her appointment.
