Bayard J. "Jack" Cournyer

Died July 2, 2018


Bayard John “Jack” Cournyer, 83, passed away peacefully Monday, July 2, 2018, at Munson Healthcare Grayling Hospital after a brief illness.

A lifetime resident of Oscoda County, he was born Oct. 1, 1934. Jack was a printer by trade and the Cournyer family published the Oscoda County News for many years. He was also an avid fisherman, hunter, archer and amateur pilot. In his retirement, he built his own lite plane and enjoyed flying it around the county, surviving a few crash landings. In recent years, he spent winters in Texas with his daughter Cathy and her family. Jack was a regular at the Bellaire (Texas) Coffee Shop and the Mio McDonald’s, where he spent many hours in lively conversation with friends around the table.

Jack is survived by his wife, Pauline (Booth) Cournyer of Mio; his daughter, Cathleen (John) Riggs of Bellaire, Texas; his sister, Marie (John) Schanck of Mio; his brother, Reuben (Nancy) Cournyer of Ocala, Fla.; three grandchildren, Keith (Jordanna), Kevin and Jack Riggs; his son-in-law, Casey Allen; one expected great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Carlene Allen; and his sister, Barbara Farthing.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday, July 5, 2018, from 6-8 p.m. at the TriPoint Church of God, and also Friday, July 6, from 10-10:45 a.m. at the church with a memorial service held at 11 a.m. with Pastor Chris Bones officiating. Interment of ashes will take place at Kittle Cemetery, Mio, at a later date.
