80th annual March of Dimes to be held Saturday

CURRAN –– March of Dimes will be coming to Curran during a fundraiser held Saturday, Jan. 27, to benefit babies and their mothers.

Organizer Maxine Small, who has put the event together for many years, said there will be door prizes, tickets for prizes, an auction and a lunch available to attendees.

“We’ve done the March of Dimes for 80 years and it’s always been in Curran,” she said. “It will be on Jan. 27 at the Mitchell Township Hall. It started 80 years ago in Curran and it’s always been the last Saturday in January and we have quilts for raffle tickets, we have a giveaway quilt and we have a quilt for auction as well.”

The event is scheduled to run from 7-10 p.m. While there is no specific fundraising goal, Small said last year the organization was able to raise more than $3,000.

Premature birth, or birth before 37 weeks of pregnancy, and its complications are the top cause of death of babies in the United States, according to marchofdimes.org. Babies who survive premature birth often have long-term health problems, and about 380,000 babies are born prematurely each year in the U.S. The preterm birth rate, or the percent of babies born before 37 weeks each year, is 9.8 percent, which means that one in 10 babies is born too soon. This rate is among the worst of high-resource nations.

According to its website, March of Dimes helps millions of babies and is now working to assist all moms and babies, no matter their age, socio-economic background or demographics. The group supports mothers throughout pregnancies and advocates for policies that prioritize their health as well as the health of their babies.
