KCC men’s basketball team taking time for kids

FAIRVIEW — The Kirtland Community College basketball team is giving back to the community by working with elementary students in Oscoda County.

The KCC men’s basketball team visited with the elementary students in Fairview on Feb. 19 to read to them and to talk about school.

According to Melony Haskin, a parapro at Fairview Elementary, it was nice to see the players sit down and talk with the kids one-on-one.

“It was great to see the players take the time to read and talk with the younger kids,” said Haskin. “The players read stories and the kids loved it. The older students had a chance to talk in depth with the players about school and about where they are from, since some of the players are from other countries.”

Haskin said that she was really impressed with the players and how they focused on the importance of school, especially with the older students.

“They talked with the kids to remind them that doing well in school is very important,” Haskin said. “They really connected with the kids and let them know that they had their struggles too in school, but they should keep trying and do their best.”
