Community taking care of community

MIO — Oscoda County is extending its hands to help anyone facing economic challenges. With the downturn in the economy a lot of people understand first hand what it’s like to juggle things and to be struggling on a daily basis.

The MSU Extension office is hosting “Terrific Tuesday” on Feb. 9 from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the Community Center. The purpose of this event is to let the community know that there are people and agencies out there that care and would like to help. There is no cost to the public to attend this event.

“The main focus we have for this event is to offer the community the help they need and to have a person for them to talk with not a website or a phone recording. “ said Andy Wallace of the MSU Extension Office.

These agencies and local businesses have pulled together to create this event. The goal is to help people who are struggling financially. The public will be able to talk with a representative one-on-one regarding housing, the need for financial assistance, health insurance, employment, education, Medicare, homelessness, abuse and information about support groups in the area.

“When people get here and if the representative they want to talk with is busy we have other things to keep them busy,” Wallace said. “Our local businesses have offered to come in and offer free lunches, haircuts, massages, gift bags and door prizes. I was amazed by the willingness of the local businesses to donate items and gift cards for door prizes.”

Wallace said the MSU Extension Office hopes to offer this program a few times a year at the Community Center in Mio. For more information on how to contact these agencies and local businesses to help contact Andy Wallace at 989-826-1160 or by e-mail at walla270@msu.edu.
